This weekend in Richmond, white supremacists apparently associated with Kyle Hunt’s “White Man March” snuck into people’s yards and left Easter eggs filled with racist propaganda for their children to find. This is not satire. Someone- a group or individual- in Richmond was sneaking around the West End on Sunday planting Easter eggs with racist notes inside.

Because it occurred in a predominantly white neighborhood, we can assume that this instance of trespassing in people’s yards to leave items for their unsuspecting children to find was just a stupidly ham-handed attempt at outreach, and not an attempt at spreading terror.

Henrico County police are seeking information about the perpetrators. We’ve contacted their office and asked to be alerted if any new information becomes available, and will communicate it here.

This is just the most recent incident in the rising tide of white supremacist and fascist activity in and around Richmond. Keep an eye out, and stay safe.

75 years ago, on this date, Billie Holiday recorded a song that Time Magazine would call song of the century: Strange Fruit, a song written about a lynching in the South.

Holiday first performed the song at Cafe Society in 1939. She said that singing it made her fearful of retaliation but, because its imagery reminded her of her father, she continued to sing the piece making it a regular part of her live performances. Because of the poignancy of the song, Josephson drew up some rules: Holiday would close with it; the waiters would stop all service in advance; the room would be in darkness except for a spotlight on Holiday’s face; and there would be no encore. During the musical introduction, Holiday would stand with her eyes closed, as if she were evoking a prayer.

Fun shark attack facts:

  • In 1996, toilets injured 43,000 Americans a year. Sharks injured 13.
  • In 1996, 2,600 Americans were injured by room fresheners. Sharks injured 13.
  • In 1996, buckets and pails injured almost 11,000 Americans. Sharks injured 13.
  • For every human killed by a shark, humans kill approximately two million sharks.

Conclusions:

  1. Humans are assholes.
  2. Sharks are not assholes.
  3. Apparently everyone in 1996 lived in a real-life infomercial.

"“If you blame Native American communities for their poverty, remember that the entire continent was stolen from them.

If you blame Black American communities for their relative poverty, remember that Black Americans were stolen from a continent, trafficked, and enslaved for nearly 300 years.

Tell me again about how your family ‘started from nothing’ when they immigrated. Didn’t they start from whiteness? Seems like a pretty good start.

The American Dream required dual genocides, but tell me again about fairness and equal opportunity. Tell me about democracy, modeled after the Iroquois Confederacy. Tell me your proud heritage, and I will show you the violence that made it so.”

A very nice article by Amelia Mason for Boston’s NPR station, 90.9 WBUR.

——————————————————————————————

“I think when you grow up and you happen to be queer there’s gonna come a moment in your life where you have to sit back and reflect on your identity, what it means to you, and how you wanna carry yourself through a world that may or may not treat you with enormous amounts of hostility,” Paternoster remarked recently over the phone.

Pure Disgust - Blind to Race

Erase their identity
So you can feel at ease
Erase their culture
Just so you can be at peace
You have no right to make me white
You have no right to make me white
Erase their identity
Erase their culture
So you can feel at ease
Just so you can be at peace
You have no right to make me white
You have no right to make me white
"No race but the human race"
Bullshit

We’re really excited to announce that Priests new record, Bodies and Control and Money and Power comes out June 3rd.

Priests are the sort of band that is unafraid to look you right in the eye and beg answers to big questions. In early 2012, Priests began playing frantic post-punk, full of tempered tension and thoughtful rage and relentless energy that would come from living in the microcosm of institutional oppression that is DC. Their music conveys a sense of unmatched urgency in their smart, politically charged, noisy songs.
You’d think it would be hard to capture Priests’ intensity on a slab of vinyl, but all the dark, aggressive sounds and kinetic energy their known for live come across on Bodies and Control and Money and Power. From the paranoid truths of “And Breeding” to the ripping “Modern Love No Weapon” to the creepy goth feel of “Doctor,” it’s Priests at their best. Essential. Recorded at Inner Ear Studio with Hugh McElroy and Kevin Erickson, and by Kyle ‘Slick’ Johnson at Fancy Time Studio.

Bodies and Control and Money and Power is out June 3rd, 2014.  Pre-orders will start soon.
Tracklisting: 1. Design Within Reach 2. Doctor 3. New 4. Powertrip 5. Modern Love / No Weapon 6. Right Wing 7. And Breeding
