The paw prints and hoof prints of a few meddlesome animals have been preserved for posterity on ancient Roman tiles recently discovered by archeologists in England.

"They are beautiful finds, as they represent a snapshot, a single moment in history," said Nick Daffern, a senior project manager with Wardell Armstrong Archaeology. "It is lovely to imagine some irate person chasing a dog or some other animal away from their freshly made tiles."

The artifacts, which could be nearly 2,000 years old, were found in the Blackfriars area of Leicester, the English city where the long-lost bones of King Richard III were discovered under a parking lot in 2012. Read more.

We’re just gonna post this nice article on DC hardcore/diy/Chris Moore here, even though Chris is prob embarrassed about it. He is kinda bashful but a true gem around these parts. There are a lot of people who make fun stuff happen in DC right now, but Chris Moore brought Pentagram to the AU cafeteria a few weeks ago. Like seriously it was one of the coolest shows

“When I was young there were beatniks. Hippies. Punks. Gangsters. Now you’re a hacktivist. Which I would probably be if I was 20. Shuttin’ down MasterCard. But there’s no look to that lifestyle! Besides just wearing a bad outfit with bad posture. Has WikiLeaks caused a look? No! I’m mad about that. If your kid comes out of the bedroom and says he just shut down the government, it seems to me he should at least have an outfit for that.”

This weekend in Richmond, white supremacists apparently associated with Kyle Hunt’s “White Man March” snuck into people’s yards and left Easter eggs filled with racist propaganda for their children to find. This is not satire. Someone- a group or individual- in Richmond was sneaking around the West End on Sunday planting Easter eggs with racist notes inside.

Because it occurred in a predominantly white neighborhood, we can assume that this instance of trespassing in people’s yards to leave items for their unsuspecting children to find was just a stupidly ham-handed attempt at outreach, and not an attempt at spreading terror.

Henrico County police are seeking information about the perpetrators. We’ve contacted their office and asked to be alerted if any new information becomes available, and will communicate it here.

This is just the most recent incident in the rising tide of white supremacist and fascist activity in and around Richmond. Keep an eye out, and stay safe.

75 years ago, on this date, Billie Holiday recorded a song that Time Magazine would call song of the century: Strange Fruit, a song written about a lynching in the South.

Holiday first performed the song at Cafe Society in 1939. She said that singing it made her fearful of retaliation but, because its imagery reminded her of her father, she continued to sing the piece making it a regular part of her live performances. Because of the poignancy of the song, Josephson drew up some rules: Holiday would close with it; the waiters would stop all service in advance; the room would be in darkness except for a spotlight on Holiday’s face; and there would be no encore. During the musical introduction, Holiday would stand with her eyes closed, as if she were evoking a prayer.

Fun shark attack facts:

  • In 1996, toilets injured 43,000 Americans a year. Sharks injured 13.
  • In 1996, 2,600 Americans were injured by room fresheners. Sharks injured 13.
  • In 1996, buckets and pails injured almost 11,000 Americans. Sharks injured 13.
  • For every human killed by a shark, humans kill approximately two million sharks.

Conclusions:

  1. Humans are assholes.
  2. Sharks are not assholes.
  3. Apparently everyone in 1996 lived in a real-life infomercial.
